Ottawa, Oct. 8 (CP) -- Canada now has almost seven times as many cases of paralytic polio as it had at this time last year.
The 1959 count stood at 1,201 cases on Oct. 3, compared with 173 on a comparable date a year ago. There have been 104 polio deaths so far this year, against 16 a year earlier.
Total cases include 781 in Quebec, 142 in Ontario, 112 in Newfoundland, 43 in British Columbia, 37 in New Brunswick, 28 in Alberta, 21 in Manitoba, 20 in Saskatchewan, 10 in the Northwest Territories, four in Prince Edward Island, two in Nova Scotia and one in the Yukon.
Quebec reports 59 of Canada's 104 deaths up to Oct. 3. There have been 14 in Ontario, nine in British Columbia, seven in Newfoundland, five in New Brunswick, four in the North- west Territories, two each in Alberta and Manitoba, and one each in Saskatchewan and the Yukon.
4 in Family Hit
Quesnel, B.C., Oct. 8 (CP) -- Four members of one family in this Central British Columbia city have been stricken by Folio. One is dead.
Earl De Witt today was awaiting an RCAF aircraft to take him to Vancouver where two of his children now are in hospital.
A third child, Edith, 13, died Oct. 4 while awaiting the arrival of an RCAF plane that took the other children, Florence, 11, and Roy, 9, to Vancouver.
Mother of Three
Medicine Hat. Alta., Oct. 8 (CP) -- Mrs. Ella Weiss, 28-year- old mother of three children, died last night of polio. Dr. J. M. Brown, City Medical Health Officer, said it was the first polio death in the city in four years. Dr. Brown said today there was no record of Mrs. Weiss having anti-polio vaccinations.
